The Sony BURANO Version 2.0 firmware update gets a release date, and it adds new recording formats, SDI output for monitoring, and improved metadata and monitoring. Let’s dive in!

The Sony BURANO was unveiled in September 2023 and features an 8.6K 35mm Full-Frame, Exmor RS CMOS sensor (35.9 x 24.0 mm), dual native ISO (800 and 3200), 16 stops of dynamic range, and shoots 8K up to 30 fps, 6K up to 60 fps, and S35 cropped 4K up to 120 fps. It’s also the world’s first PL-Mount camera with built-in IBIS along with IBIS and built-in ND. The BURANO includes a Sony E mount (lever lock type). Check out CineD’s lab tests here.

Sony BURANO Version 2.0 firmware update – features and enhancements

In November 2024, Sony released a firmware roadmap for their Cinema Line of cameras, including the BURANO, VENICE 2, FX3, FX30, and FX6. It detailed features they were planning on releasing for each camera, starting in 2025 and running through 2026. Many of the improvements and additions are based on user feedback and requests. Additionally, Sony released the BURANO Version 1.1 firmware update last summer.

A few of the key features and improvements found in the Sony BURANO Version 2.0 firmware update include new recording formats, 1.8x de-squeeze, SDI output, and improvements to monitoring and metadata.

  • 3.8K Full-Frame crop at up to 120 fps, utilizing nearly the entire sensor (XAVC and X-OCN).
  • 4.3K 4:3 mode (anamorphic) at up to 60 fps (Super 35; X-OCN only).
  • 1.9K 16:9 mode at up to 240 fps (Super 35; XAVC only). 24.00 fps to X-OCN 16:9 imager modes.
  • Additional high frame rate (S&Q) modes: 66, 72, 75, 88, 90, 96, and 110 fps.
  • Proxy recording for 24.00 fps recording formats.
  • 1.8x de-squeeze setting for anamorphic lenses.
  • New exposure tools (High / Low Key), based on the VENICE, including white balance memory presets from 3 to 8. Plus support for Active / High Image Stabilization in Full-Frame crop 6K and Super 35 1.9K 16:9 imager modes.
  • Enhanced autofocus at 23.98, 24, 25, and 29.97 fps.
  • Standardized SDI output for consistent monitoring across XAVC and X-OCN. Breathing and image stabilization metadata in X-OCN and timecode and clip name metadata to SDI output.
  • Moves the status information outside the image while monitoring.
  • View Finder Gamma Display Assist while using S-Log3 for monitoring.
  • 24V output when using PL-Mount lenses. Includes use of focus, iris, and zoom using the BURANO GP-VR100 handgrip (optional accessory).
