Sony FX6 Firmware 4.00 Released – Adds Anamorphic De-Squeeze, Cine EI Quick & More

The newest version 4.00 of the firmware for Sony’s FX6 cinema cameras is available for download now. It was announced in June and now you can get it right here. This update upgrades the camera with functions from both lower and higher models of Sony’s camera lineup.

It’s always nice when manufacturers treat cameras that have been in the market for a few years with firmware updates that actually add new functions. Sounds obvious, but unfortunately that is not the case anymore with every camera model … but at least with their “Pro” video models, Sony seems to do their homework.

Sony FX6 firmware 4.00 adds anamorphic de-squeeze

The update adds some new long awaited features to the camera such as a de-squeeze display function when using anamorphic lenses. The modes include a 1.3x and 2.0x de-squeeze, though other modes are sadly still missing.

Autofocus in more Slow & Quick modes, Cine EI Quick profile added

The autofocus has been extended so that it can also be used in more Slow & Quick Motion frame rates (starting at 7 frames and quicker). The Cine EI Quick picture profile (which up until now was only found on the FX30 and FX3) has been added and flexible ISO settings now allow the users to capture the highest dynamic range from the camera, according to Sony.

Clip naming system updated

Sony has also simplified the clip naming system. The camera now has an ID to better organize the files. The FX9, VENICE, and VENICE2 cinema cameras also use this system. It will be especially useful when shooting in multi-camera configurations with some or all of these cameras.

Head over to the Sony website to download the firmware update (including instructions on how to perform it). Remember that you perform firmware updates on your camera at your own risk, generally it’s advisable to use only a full battery and still have the camera plugged in to DC power when performing a firmware update.
