Sound Devices 8-Series v4.00 Firmware Update
The Sound Devices 8-Series of field recorders/mixers are hands down some of the best pieces of equipment you can get. Indeed, these high-end pieces of audio technology are designed for sound recordists that make a living off their craft. Sound professionals need tools that work day in day out flawlessly and that makes their lives easier on set.
Back to our topic, Sound Devices just introduced the firmware version 4.00 for the Scorpio, 833, and 888 units. The main selling point of this new firmware is the support for the CL-16 Linear Fader Control Surface.
The CL-16 features dedicated, non-banking controls for channels 1-16, each fader being manufactured by Penny & Giles for ultra-smooth travel. Also, there are multiple soft-touch buttons for critical functions and a panoramic LCD. The CL-16 is 16.3″ wide, it operates from 12V DC, and it fits easily in a cart. As a reference, the Sound Devices Scorpio can record up to 32 channel/36 tracks: this gives you an idea of how many microphones you need to mix at once, and the CL-16 will be a useful addition to any sound cart.
The firmware update v4.00 for the Sound Devices Series-8 also allows sound professionals to customize the names of outputs and SD cards. Also, it is now possible to solo one or multiple particular buses during playback to monitor your mixes. Finally, a “Require Shift for Mute” option for third-party controllers has been added, channel bus sends available in bus screens, and various stability enhancements.
