Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD Lens for Nikon Z-mount Announced

Tamron has released the 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD ultra-telephoto zoom lens for Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras. This lens boasts an impressive 8x zoom range starting at 50mm, along with autofocus and vibration compensation, all within a fairly compact and portable design. The lens is versatile enough for a wide range of photography, from landscapes and wildlife to sports and portraits, so let’s have a look!

Tamron has been steadily adding lenses to their arsenal, including the 28-300mm f/4-7.1 Di III VC VXD for Sony E and the 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III VXD G2 for Nikon Z Mirrorless cameras. Now, they’ve released the 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD Nikon Z version of the Sony model from 2022.

Lens features

Besides that 8x zoom ratio, the 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 lens also offers the VXD1 linear motor focus mechanism, which lets you focus quickly and quietly from MOD (Minimum Object Distance) to infinity, an advantage for wildlife and sports photographers. In addition, Tamron’s proprietary VC2 (Vibration Compensation) system should effectively reduce camera shake, particularly when using telephoto focal lengths or shooting at slower shutter speeds. According to Tamron, the image stabilizer allows for shooting at shutter speeds up to 5 EV stops slower than would typically be possible without stabilization.

The 50-400mm lens is also great for close-ups. At the 50 mm zoom setting, the minimum focusing distance is 9.8 inches (25cm), allowing for half-macro shooting with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2. Even at the 400mm telephoto end, the minimum focusing distance is 59.1 inches (1.5m), providing a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.

Other features of the camera include a Zoom Lock mechanism so the tube doesn’t extend during transport, BBAR G2 anti-reflection lens coating, and the incorporation of the Tamron Lens Utility for customizing functions and updating the firmware – users can connect to their computer through a USB Type-C connector port directly on the lens.
