TASCAM has just released an upgraded version of its compact DR-10L audio recorder: the DR-10L Pro. This Pro version adds timecode support via an optional Bluetooth adapter, increased microSDXC capacity, extended battery life, and, most importantly, 32-bit float internal recording capability, so you no longer have to worry about your audio levels. So let’s take a closer look at all the new features of the DR-10L Pro!

The compact TASCAM DR-10L audio recorder was released in September 2016. Back in the day, it was one of the most compact audio recorders available on the market, and it has been trendy since its launch amongst wedding filmmakers, for example. Indeed, with one removable AAA battery, a locking microphone connector, a decent battery life, and easy-to-adjust settings, the DR-10L is a convenient “set and forget” audio recorder to put on a bride or groom.
However, more compact wireless audio systems are now available, such as the Hollyland LARK MAX we recently reviewed, making the original DR-10L a little less relevant. To get some market shares back, TASCAM has just released the DR-10L Pro, an updated version with 32-bit float internal recording capabilities. But will it be enough with devices like the Tentacle TRACK E 32-bit float audio recorder?
TASCAM DR-10L Pro – features
The TASCAM DR-10L Pro is a compact and lightweight belt-pack-style audio recorder with only 5.3 x 5.1 x 2cm/2.1 x 2 x 0.8″ dimensions. The DR-10L Pro now takes two AAA batteries – compared to one for its predecessor – for a maximum runtime of 24.5 hours and a weight of 65g/2.3oz.

These removable batteries and extended runtime are genuine arguments for the DR-10L Pro over its competitors, often featuring a built-in battery. Indeed, built-in batteries often don’t last an entire shooting day, so you can’t use your audio recorder as a “set and forget” device.
On top of the DR-10L Pro, you’ll find the 3.5mm lockable TRS microphone input and a USB Type-A port to attach the optional TASCAM AK-BT1 Bluetooth adapter. You’ll need this Bluetooth adapter to control up to five DR-10L Pro at once using the free iOS/Android CONTROL App.
The AK-BT1 adapter is also needed to benefit from the DR-10L Pro wireless timecode capabilities. Wireless timecode is compatible with multiple Atomos products, such as Ultrasync Blue and UltraSync ONE timecode receivers.
You’ll find a USB Type-C port on the left side of the TASCAM DR-10L Pro and a microSD port. You can now use microSDXC with a maximum capacity of 512GB.
The right side of the recorder features a 3.5mm headphone jack and the multifunctional Power On/Off, Lock, and Record switch.
All the controls and transport buttons are located at the bottom of the DR-10L Pro. You’ll find Menu, Down/Previous, Up/Next, Enter/Play, and headphone volume buttons.
32-bit float recording
However, as I mentioned previously, the most significant addition to the DR-10L Pro is the new 32-bit float recording mode. The recorder now uses dual analog-to-digital converters to capture a wide dynamic range, so you no longer have to worry about your audio levels. Indeed, it is nearly impossible to clip a 32-bit float audio recording (your microphone will probably clip before the audio recorder). Also, you can recover low-level recordings without adding any noise.

Indeed, the TASCAM DR-10L Pro comes with a free download of the iZotope RX Elements audio production software. This easy-to-use suite of tools will allow you to process your 32-bit float audio recordings efficiently.

The TASCAM DR-10L Pro is available for preorder now for $219 and should start shipping soon. As a direct comparison, the Zoom F2 retails for $179, and the Tentacle TRACK E retails for $349.
