The ASC Award Nominees 2025 Revealed

The ASC Award Nominees 2025 Revealed

Winter is well underway, and so is the award season. Delayed this year due to the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles, the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) revealed the nominees for their 2025 Outstanding Achievement Awards. As a reminder, these awards span from feature films, documentaries, TV shows, and music videos, recognizing the work of cinematographers. Who are the ASC Award Nominees this year? Find out below!

Last year, Hoyte van Hoytema won the ASC award in the feature film category for Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” and, roughly a month later, went home with a cinematography Oscar for the same work. It’s not an unusual scenario, so the stakes are high. This year’s different categories include legendary names and newcomers, but the choice mostly aligns with the overall critical acclaim.

Theatrical Feature Film: ASC Award Nominees

The list of feature nominees for the 39th ASC Outstanding Achievement Awards includes seven names (this number can vary between five and ten, depending on how many votes a film receives). These names are:

  • Jarin Blaschke for “Nosferatu” (Focus Features). Jarin Blaschke already won an ASC Award once—in the Spotlight category—for his work on Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse. “Nosferatu” is a gothic horror based on the classic Dracula novel. It is another collaboration between Blatschke and Eggers and is truly a visual masterpiece.
  • Alice Brooks, ASC for “Wicked” (Universal Pictures). If you haven’t heard of this magical musical, I would be surprised: It’s been buzzing for months. With this nomination, the cinematographer of the movie—Alice Brooks—becomes the fourth female DP ever to be nominated in the ASC’s top category.
  • Lol Crawley, BSC for “The Brutalist” (A24). It’s not the first ASC nomination for the English cinematographer Lol Crawley, but “The Brutalist” brought him out of “Spotlight” to the “Theatrical Feature” category. This epic period drama was shot using VistaVision cameras and process.
  • Stéphane Fontaine, AFC for “Conclave” (Focus Features). Another feature nominee this year (and a new name on the ASC awards list) is French cinematographer, Stéphane Fontaine, for photographing Ed Berger’s Vatican drama “Conclave.”
  • Greig Fraser, ASC, ACS for “Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros. Pictures). No surprises here. “Dune: Part One” won Greig Fraser an ASC award and an Oscar for Outstanding Cinematography. The second (and even more visually impressive) part also performs great in this award season, so we’ll see.
  • Edward Lachman, ASC for “Maria” (Netflix). Edward Lachman is a veteran of the ASC awards (including the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award). Last year, his name was on the list for “El Conde”; this year, he got his nomination for “Maria,” a psychological biopic by Pablo Larraín about opera singer Maria Callas.
  • Phedon Papamichael, ASC, GSC, GCA for “A Complete Unknown” (Searchlight Pictures). Last but not least, another biographical drama, “A Complete Unknown,” and a beautiful work by the DP Phedon Papamichael. His previous collaborations with James Mangold include the ASC-nominated “Ford v Ferrari.”
