Vimeo App for the Apple Vision Pro Released - Spatial Video for Immersive Storytelling

For those who have taken the plunge and invested in the Apple Vision Pro, Vimeo has launched a new app that will let its users experience “immersive storytelling with spatial video.” According to Vimeo, this new format offers a more lifelike and immersive experience than traditional 2D formats. So, let’s take a closer look at spatial video and what the app offers!

First, to get an idea of what the Apple Vision Pro can do, have a look at the following video introduction by Apple. In addition, you might want to listen to Nino’s interview with Christoph Tilley from MXR Productions in CineD’s latest podcast, where you can get their take on video production for the Vision Pro. We also recently had a look at the Apple 8K 3D Camera used to shoot the short film “Submerged,” specifically for the device.

Vimeo was founded in 2004 as a side project for a couple of developers who wanted to share short videos with friends. Since then, it has evolved into a respected place for filmmakers who want to showcase their work professionally and without any ads you often see on other platforms. Vimeo is ad-free, using a subscription-based model or Saas (software as a service) instead of advertising revenue. Despite industry challenges, Vimeo has consistently innovated to maintain their position, and their recent collaboration with Apple’s Vision Pro represents another strategic move.

What are spatial videos?

Spatial videos offer a 3D viewing experience by capturing depth along with height and width, creating a more immersive experience than traditional formats. Users can record and watch spatial videos on the Vision Pro, with additional recording support on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 models, all of which can be uploaded to Vimeo for sharing and viewing.

To get an idea of what a spatial video looks like, the following is the trailer for a short film titled “Currents,” shot entirely in spatial format that is due to be released in November:

As an example of other creative ways spatial video can be used, Vimeo offers examples that could serve the business community, including:

  • More immersive product demos to enhance the way you showcase your product at trade shows or events.
  • Employee training and education experiences that make employees lean in and drive better retention.
  • Marketing campaigns that transport consumers into the content, providing more enriching touchpoints to drive engagements and, ultimately, sales.

Price and availability

The Vimeo app is free to download (with in-app purchases available) for the Apple Vision Pro from the app store here.

Have you tried recording or watching spatial videos on the Vision Pro or a compatible iPhone model? What types of content do you think would benefit most from spatial video? Let us know in the comments!
