DSC04916
DSC04915Edelkrone
Monitor / EVF holder
$170

This is the second most affordable EVF mounts I could find and at the same time it’s right next to the Zacuto Axis among the most intelligent designs I’ve seen. The edelkrone EVF holder attaches to the hotshoe of your DSLR thus it requires no cage and no 15mm rails or other mounting point.
DSC04919The optional accessory connector can give you your hotshoe back if you need it.

If you would like to attach this device to a cage or rod this can be done via a coldshoe adapter.
DSC04920Just like the Zacuto Axis the edelkrone EVF holder works from top down to keep the space beside the lens free for the follow focus. But the edelkrone can be adjusted easily and can basically be flipped around at both mounting points providing for a lot of flexibility given the size of the unit.

DSC04918The arm itself has a friction joint so it will only move when force is applied. The amount of friction can be adjusted (roughly) by loosening or tightening any of the screws on the friction box.

DSC04922While this unit is very complete, flexible and very well thought through it can’t compete with the quality and durability of the Solid Camera, Zacuto Axis or Wooden Camera EVF mounts. But given the low price and intelligent design this unit is very well worth considering as a EVF mounting solution.

This is the one I’ll use for my next projects.

Pro’s and Con’s:

+ Can also hold field monitors
+ Flexible in a small form factor
+ Friction arm for one-handed adjustment
+ Friction adjustment
+ Hot-shoe mount is very welcome for DSLR users
+ god quality
+ low price

– Second element needs 2 hands for adjustment
– friction adjustment not ideal
– not as smooth as high end units

DSC04855
DSC04892Lanparte
Heavy Duty Magic Arm
$119

DSC04858As for the most affordable of all units I’ve looked at, I’ve tried a different approach which could also be done with the SHAPE Rod Bloc EVF Mount and Zacuto Z-ERM EVF Rod Mount.

Just as the other two it attaches to you rigs’ 15mm rails and as you see I attached it to the cage via an additional rodmount on top in order to save the space underneath the lens for a follow focus unit or whatever you’d like to place there.

DSC04862bThe long rods the unit consists of and the multiple joints make this EVF mount very flexible. It’s possible to position the EVF in more ways than most other devices tested here and sits very tightly when locked down. So for the money this device is quite alright.

DSC04856What’s missing though is a friction adjustment which the edelkrone provides for easy repositioning of the EVF. If I want to reposition the EVF with the Lanparte mount I need both hands and might have to open and close multiple knobs. Instead of a friction box the Lanparte Heavy Duty Magic Arm has a tooth-joint which provides for ultimate stability. In this regard the name of the device is well chosen.

The Lanparte Heavy Duty Magic Arm works in a similar fashion as the Zacuto Z-ERM EVF Rod Mount, provides a lot of flexibility and stability but is probably better suited for monitors than EVFs.

Pro’s and Con’s:

+ Can also hold field monitors
+ Positions the EVF more right than other EVF mounts
+ Sits real tight when locked down
+ Good screws and knobs for the money
+ Flexible
+ Rods are secured with end caps

– Better for monitors than EVF’s
– Arm extends very far to the left
– 15mm rod mount not ideal
– Too many knobs
– No one-handed adjustments possible. No Friction arm
– Not very ergonomic or easy to use
– too low or too high (in reverse) when upside down.
– not so easy to setup
