ZILR USB-C Dummy Battery Range Announced with NP-F Adaptor Plate

Australia has given the camera community a boon in the last decade. With DaVinci Resolve and Blackmagic Design cameras, getting high-end production tools for what amounts to peanuts has created a revolution. Today, another Australian company wants a piece of that pie. The ZILR USB-C dummy battery range has been announced for four different cameras, along with an NP-F adapter plate.

ZILR is a company that up until now has focused on a limited product range. By sticking to cables and power accessories, they have carved out a small niche of necessary tools for creatives. Their new range of dummy batteries, in combination with their NP-F adapter plate, opens up some interesting power options for Sony, Panasonic, Nikon, and Canon camera users! Let’s dig a little deeper into their new offerings.

The dummies

The mates down in Melbourne have had an NP-F970 battery for sale already for some time. This high-capacity battery offers 10,050mAh with a UCB-C port for fast charging or powering compatible hardware. Building upon this initial UBC-C tech, the ZILR dummy batteries now offer expanded power options for the above-mentioned camera manufacturers.

The Sony dummy battery covers all cameras that are compatible with NF-FZ100 batteries. The Panasonic option covers any cameras with DMW-DCC16 compatibility. While the Nikon and Canon options will power cameras with EN-EL15 and LP-E6 compatibility, respectively. According to ZILR, the USB-C will take in 18W but provide a regulated 8 to 8.4V output at 3.5A max.

The NP-F Adapter Plate

The last bit of kit compliments both ZILR’s NP-F970 battery and their dummy range. The simple battery adapter plate holds NP-F/L-Series batteries and attaches to anything compatible with 1/4″-20 screws. When used conjunctions with ZILR’s new offerings, it creates a simple power solution with a small footprint. Here’s a breakdown of what’s new on the market:

Do you need it?

Probably. ZILR’s initial offerings have been advertised to support Atomos products and the Z-Cam. If your kit is suited for powering NP-F970 or USB-C, then this is an attractive solution with an equally attractive price point. While individual use cases may vary and will need to be tested before relying on this setup, it’s wonderful to see another company offering a budget solution. At the very least, it creates competition within the market that should only help this kind of tech evolve into something better and more affordable.
